Cricova is the largest underground wine cellar in Moldova and one of the largest wine cellar in the world. It is located in the Codru wine region, which is only 15 kilometers away from the center of the capital Chisinau. In the 15th century, when the construction of Chisinau, the capital of Mol-dova, began, underground limestone was mined for the construction of houses. During the quarrying process, people found that the underground temperature and humidity did not change all year round, which is very suitable for storing wine. Therefore, since 1952, it has become a large un-derground wine cellar with more than 150 kilometers of wine storage tun-nels (still expanding). Cricova is still a state-owned enterprise, and Mol-dovan law stipulates that it belongs to the national cultural heritage. Many celebrities in the world have visited Cricova, such as our country’s former president Jiang Zemin, Russian President Putin, and German Chancellor Merkel.
Putin has his own private wine collection here and celebrated his 50th birthday here. Cricova also has a wine from Jerusalem in 1902. Gagarin, the first astronaut to land on the moon, spent a pleasant few days here, lost in a dazzling array of wines. He once wrote an inscription: Everyone can find their favorite wine here; if not, then I can only go to the moon and find it for you.
Cricova is also known as the underground wine city. It is located more than 80-100 meters underground and the total length of the tunnel is about 150 kilometers (still expanding). In this underground wine city, the intricate streets are named after grape varieties.
Cricova has produced its first bottle of sparkling wine since 1957). Cricova has an annual output of about 10 million bottles, of which about 60% is sparkling wine, most of which are brewed by traditional methods. Cricova now has more than 600 hectares of vineyards. Many of the more than 300 hectares that have been planted in the past ten years with strong ability to prevent pests are local grape varieties.
Cricova has a complete set of supporting facilities for wine tourism, and has its own independent wine museum, restaurant, and mature wine tour tasting system. Since 2016, Cricova has also organized a marathon of 10 kilometers underground in Moldova, attracting hundreds of sports fans from home and abroad every year.
